Whether you’re an athlete, executive, student, or performer, your success is not driven by talent alone; it starts with your nervous system and how you self-regulate and respond to situations. The more you know about your nervous system, the better control you have over your mind and body to understand and respond to stressors.
Your autonomic nervous system has two primary branches:
Sympathetic Nervous System (SNS) – “Fight or Flight”
Parasympathetic Nervous System (PNS) – “Rest and Digest”
Sensory and motor neurons take in information, process the information, and respond with an outcome using your sensory system of sight, smell, touch, hearing, and taste. This is what you use to develop your skills and being regulated.
When your nervous system is regulated you are able to”
- Focus your attention
- Reaction time improves
- decision-making becomes clearer
- Emotional control strengthens
- The body feels powerful and not tense
When dysregulated:
- Over-activation – anxiety, tight muscles, rushed decisions
- Under-activation – fatigue, brain fog, disengagement
The optimal zone is often referred to as the “window of tolerance” a state of mind that is in flow with energized calm.
Ways to handle dysregulation:
- The ability to identify and validate anxiety or stress is beneficial to help process the situation.
2. Understand what or why you are nervous, things from your past experiences can be triggered up and needs to be resolved.
3. Breathwork and slow controlled breathing stimulate the vagus nerve and activate the parasympathetic system to calm down and focus on task.
4. EMDR and Bi-Lateral Sound Stimulation (B-LSS) will help you calm and regulate your nervous system and process your stressors to improve your focus and performance.
